MAC Year of the Snake Lipsticks

So, I normally avoid MAC's seasonal collections: 1) you're paying more for the packaging (and personally, I'm not into the white, Archie cartoon packaging), and 2) the quality is usually reviewed poorly (below the normal MAC quality from their permanent range - e.g., their brush sets or eyeshadows).

That being said, I couldn't help myself here. The Year of the Snake is very sentimental to me (although, I'm not a Year of the Snake myself), and the price of the products is equal (NOT higher) than their normal range. Also, the collection is re-promoted from their permanent range. So, I kind of appreciate that they're not "selling" you on the exclusivity of it. They're selling you on the packaging, which is not at an increased charge. That is, the Year of the Snake lipsticks (Freckletone, Plumful, and Cockney) are all lipsticks available in their permanent range for $15 apiece (the same price). If you like the pretty snake (cardboard sleeve) packaging and the snake etchings in the lipstick, you might as well go for the Year of the Snake collection (unless you hate lustre formulas - beware!).

I wasn't able to get Plumful, but it reminded me a lot of Guerlain's Spring 2013 Collection Shine Automatique in Rendez-Vous. So, I'm too bummed to miss out.

The swatches were decent, and to be honest, I expected very little from the lustre formula. Cockney is more pigmented than I expected, but it's definitely patchy (and gets patchier as the night continues). Still, the color payoff is decent for a lustre formula, and there's a little glitter sparkle in it.

Freckletone is very, very ... beige ;). Whether or not it will look good on you will depend a lot on your lip pigmentation. I think it looks fine on me. I don't own many beige lipsticks. I find it less patchy than Cockney. So, that's a plus.

- see the patchiness?

My final thoughts are this: If you like the permanent range versions of these re-promotes and don't own them or need backups, buy these up! They're the same price, and the snake packaging and etching is beautiful. I'm not sure the eyeshadows, which are larger than the permanent range, are worth it - that's a lot of product. You really have to love AND use it often. But, the lipsticks are a little better than I expected for a lustre, and the snake etching is so darling. Even if I hate it, and don't use it, I have more of the etching to look at ;). Hope that helps a little!
